Many thanks to Todd Giles from the excellent Newcastle Football History Facebook page who provided many of the photos and information for the following kits.

Formed 1991

The Newcastle Breakers were formed in 1991 out of elements of the Newcastle Austral club, they participated in the National Soccer League for 9 seasons from 1991-92, until their dissollution in 1999-2000.

The club fared poorly on the field in its nine season in the national league, failing to reach the finals at every attempt.

The Breakers were unlikely winners in the 1995 ARL-Super League war. In 1995 the Super League franchise, the Hunter Mariners chose Breakers Stadium as their headquarters and subsequently several hundred thousands of dollars were pumped into the ground to make it one of the most impressive Ericsson Cup Stadiums.

The club folded  not long after the Breakers decided not to sell star striker Warren Spink there was a large public outcry which caused Spink not to be sold. The club actually folded when BHP and Mitre-10 withdrew sponsorship - the exact money needed to keep the club surviving.

The club's demise led to the creation of Newcastle United Jets.
