Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea were one of the founding members of the Oceania Football Confedetation and are full memebers of FIFA. For various reasons over the years they have either not entered the World Cup or have been knocked out early in the qualifying rounds. However in the early years of the South Pacific Cup they performed well, achieving two 3rd places in 1969 and 1987 and three 4th place finishes.

Soccer was first introduced into PNG in 1884 in Finschafen, Morobe Province by German missionaries and an organized football competition was started in the gold fields of Wau/Bulolo by the indigenous gold-miners.

The Port Moresby football association was first established in January 1962 with help from Australia and later in 1962, the Papua New Guinea Football Association was established. In 1963 Papua New Guinea Football Association quickly moved to become a member of FIFA in 1963 and in 1966 PNG was a chief player in the formation of the Oceania Football Confederation. The founding members of OFC were PNG, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia.
