Through the 1960s the club worked its way up the lower leagues of New South Wales football. In 1970 the club won the Division 1 championship, earning promotion to the premier competition the New South Wales State League. From 1971 to 1976 the club competed in the State League, with the most successful season coming in its inaugural season in the competition in 1971. The club was the runner-up, having lost the Grand Final to St George Budapest 3-2.

Western Suburbs were founder members of the NSL in 1977, being one of five New South Wales clubs in the inaugural season, and in their first season finished a respectable 5th, after being undefeated in the opening five matches and leading the competition for a large part of the first half of the season. In their second and final season they only managed to finish 9th. The 1978 season would prove to be a disastrous one for the club off the field, putting it under immense financial strain and the club withdrew from the NSL. In 1979 they amalgamated with local rivals APIA Leichardt who assumed their place in the NSL.
